Job Summary

The City of Fort Collins is seeking a Director, Accounting,to join our Financial Services department to lead the charge in managing andenhancing the financial health of our organization. As the Accounting Director,you will oversee our financial operations precisely, ensuring compliance,accuracy, and efficiency. This senior leadership role calls for an experiencedaccounting professional with a deep grasp of financial principles and a knackfor strategic thinking.
Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range offinancial activities, from the design and operation of the City's internalcontrol and financial risk management systems, to support of an upcomingmultiyear ERP replacement project, to owning the financing of major projectswithin the City's capital strategy like the funding for a new City Hall andcivic campus. You'll also take the reins in guiding a high-performingaccounting team, nurturing their talents, and fostering growth. Your expertisewill be crucial in maintaining compliance with accounting standards andregulations and steering us through external audits and tax matters. As astrategic partner to the executive team, you'll provide invaluable financialinsights and recommendations to drive our company's success.

We seek a candidate with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting,Finance, or a related field and proven experience in senior accountingleadership roles. CPA or CMA certification is a plus. Your knack forproblem-solving and decision-making and your proficiency in financial softwareand systems will be assets in this role. Strong communication skills and theability to collaborate with cross-functional teams are essential. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Oversees the operation of the Accounting, Investment & Treasury, Accounts Payable and Payroll divisions; developing and implementing goals, policies, priorities and operating procedures.
  • Performs advanced and specialized accounting assignments, usually involving complex and confidential data. The Resulting reports may be used by upper-level management in making organizational decisions.
  • Leads the development and maintenance of internal controls and daily accounting procedures within the Accounting Department and across the city.
  • Responsible for timely and complete financial statements/reporting; coordinates the preparation of the City’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and the City’s Monthly Financial Operating Report.
  • Ensures financial reporting is compliant with City Charter provisions, state regulations, Federal grant requirements, General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standard Board (GASB).
  • Evaluates recurring monthly procedures looking for opportunities to implement process and control improvement.
  • Regularly evaluates accounting processes and procedures to identify opportunities to implement improvements that provide departments and affiliates with additional financial reporting transparency, efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ensures that financial systems and reporting meet the requirements of external auditors and government agencies.
  • Provides support to the CFO and Operations in the analysis of the financial performance of the City.
  • Leads, documents, and organizes the month-end and year-end financial close process.
  • Oversees the financial planning, cash management, and investment of City funds.
  • May act as Chief Financial Officer in their absence.
